5 Toxic Foods for Pets

“Just a little bit…”

That’s what we say when we give our pet people food. I am guilty of it as well! But what foods are toxic for your pet? You may be surprised by what you find out! Here are 5 foods that are toxic for pets.

Grapes and Raisins

Even one small grape or raisin can cause kidney failure. No one is certain what part of the grape or raisin is toxic, but until more information is know about this fruit, it’s best to avoid feeding them to your pet.

Macadamia Nuts

These nuts are usually around during the holidays in nut bowls and in deserts but they can cause serious issues like vomiting, weakness, termors, and hyperthermia in dogs. Usually you will see signs within 12 hours of ingestion.

Yeast Dough

Raw dough can rise and cause your pet’s digestive system to bloat and possibly twist their stomach or intestines which is a life threatening emergency! Yeast can also cause your dog to become drunk.

Alcohol

There should be no reason why you would give your pet a “swig” of alcohol, but sometimes pets will get into open drinks that may be left out. Alcohol can cause diarrhea, vomiting, difficulty breathing, tremors, coma, and even death. If you suspect your pet has ingested alcohol, call a Pet Poison Helpline immediately!

Xylitol

Xylitol is a sweetener that is used in gum, baked goods, candy, toothpaste, and even some peanut butters! It’s very important to read your label if you give peanut butter as xylitol can lead to hypoglycemia, vomiting, lethargy, loss of coordination, seizures, and liver failure.

Giving people/table food to a pet can cause many different issues including vomiting, diarrhea, pancreatitis (read more), and other problems.

All in all, it’s best to always give your pet food that is recommended by your veterinarian. If you are unsure if you can give your pet a specific table food, give us a call at 850-479-9484.
